An Unresolved Peace Prize

juan-manuel-santosColombian President Juan Manuel Santos won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his efforts to end a five-decades-long civil war that has killed more than 200,000 people over there.

The award came just days after Colombian voters narrowly rejected the peace deal.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that voters’ rejection doesn’t mean the peace process is dead.

“The referendum was not a vote for or against peace,” it said.  “What the ‘No’ side rejected was not the desire for peace, but a specific peace agreement.”

Under the peace deal he negotiated, rebels who turn over their weapons and confess to war crimes will be spared time in jail. FARC will also get 10 seats in congress through 2026 to smooth their transition into a political movement.

This would have been an obvious award if the Colombian people had ratifies the agreement in the recent referendum; but they didn’t and it is not clear how the civil war will actually end.

Now, I’m not sure if the Nobel should go to good intentions only, but to be factual The Nobel Peace Prize is an award given by a private foundation to whomever it chooses, for whatever reason that it chooses to do so.

From Hitler to Obama, the list of nominees and winners is illogical in some cases, but you can’t expect reason… After all, the creator of the award, Alfred Nobel, was a munitions dealer who made millions inventing items that caused the deaths of millions more.

Regardless the irony, at least Santos tried.

However, to me this award should have go the White Helmets of Syria.

“Angels” on earth in the middle of hell.

i can’t imagine living in the condition like such in syria or any nation, for that matter, that is in war. may the people like the white helmets be blessed and multiply, and get acknowledge for what they do. because in the time like this we need to show that lives do matter, no matter which side they are on. because humanity exists and should live on.
