I haven’t go the cinema in a while, and currently are playing two superhero movies from my childhood’s memories I want to watch.

The two captain marvels: Captain Marvel and Shazam.

Although Captain Marvel was only on comics, Shazam was made a TV series in the 70’s and I used to watch it when I was a kid.

The new DC superhero movie Shazam! opened last weekend, starring Zachary Levi as young Billy Batson who transforms into a red-and-gold costumed superhero when he says the magic word.

The hero’s failure to find an appropriately catchy name is one of the movie’s running jokes (the IMDB just lists him as Shazam). But earlier Shazam! fans of the Whiz comic, the 1940s serial, and the 1970s TV show know that that hero had a different (and familiar) name.

That guy was known as Captain Marvel, and in the 1970s, at least, his counterpart Billy Batson (played by Michael Gray) had a whole crew of Olympian advisors.

When times got tough, Billy would either say the magic word (“Shazam!”) to turn into the Superman-like Captain Marvel, or call out the gods/demigods he got his name from: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury.

The elders in the series were animated with some trippy colored lighting effects as they offered Billy their combined age-old wisdom. Other Shazams leaned mainly on the Wizard Shazam, but 1970s Billy got a whole crew that made him more mystical.

The special effects, of course, are shit compared of what we have today.

Regardless, Shazam was never my favourite hero.

But still want to watch it.

Shazam, which is scheduled to arrive April 5, 2019, is the seventh film in the DC Extended Universe.

Actor Zachary Levi has been selected to play the superhero.

Now, Shazam has always been confusing to me ’cause I never knew how to call him. I mean I’m not even sure if they’re going to call him Shazam!

See when the character was first created he was named Captain Thunder with the original idea of having seven kids combine to become Captain Thunder (the same idea seen in Flashpoint).

But the idea was changed to one boy… But the name Captain Thunder was already in use so the name had to be changed.

The character soon became Captain Marvelous. A little later, the name was changed to Captain Marvel. But also at the time Marvel comics had a female character with the same name.

Due to all that mess with the names DC keept the character relatively quiet.

But with this relaunch, everything can change….

Now I think most of us, kids at heart, know him better as Shazam, even though Shazam is also the name of the wizard that gave this superhero his powers.

Anyhow, what I like the most about the story of Captain Marvel (or whatever the hell his final name is) is the mixed mythological /biblical references (I love mythology) as he has the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury; when he (or they) call the power of S.H.A.Z.A.M!

In short, I hope they make a once for all clear story about Earth’s mightiest mortal.
